I would like to better understand the science of alkaloid extraction of Poppy Pods and Seeds

I have been doing a lot of research these past few weeks. It appears most scientific studies I have found are from 18-1900s. And sadly mostly focused on extracting morphine from the poppy.
I am a novice in biochemistry but do understand the very basics from extractions of DMT and Mescaline.
Poppy Seed and Poppy Pod methods are all over the place. Some suggest hot water, some cold. I have read the form of morphine is different than what you would find in an actual morphine pill so temperature, PH etc. is entirely different.
Here is my goal: I have some dried pods. I would like to make a tea. I want to extract ALL alkaloids and reduce it down to a putty/powder that can be capsuled.
For years what I have done is remove the seeds and save for later, grind up the pods to almost a powder. Then basically by making a tea, keeping the water at no higher than 90C for 1 hour then turn off the heat and let it rest over night.
Ill then use some cheese cloth and squeeze all the water out. I will do this 2-3 more times and the results are acceptable but I'd like to take a more scientific approach.
Again, everything I can find is mostly about only extracting the morphine. I want the morphine, codeine, thebaine, noscapine, and papaverine etc extracted and then reduced - as I subscribe to the belief that there is a synergistic effect to all of these alkoloids similar marijuana with terpenes and cannabinoids.
How do I even start to discover the popper temperatures to get these, or the best PH? Or is water even the best medium to use. My limited knowledge of other extracts in A/B extraction is there are things such as polarity and PH are important.
Here are a few of the best sources I have found so far:
A) https://www.unodc.org/unodc/en/data-and-analysis/bulletin/bulletin_1957-01-01_2_page007.html B) https://drive.google.com/file/d/18Z61R-j4UBkUzsP1F5xRVhNlOAbcDMBW Ba) summary of above findings (https://www.reddit.com/PoppyTeaUniversity/comments/76yw26/quantification_of_morphine_codeine_and_thebaine/)
A) seems to be the most promising, where one can extract most of the alkoloids without multiple stages. But I don't fully understated the verbage.
This is my undestanding after reading it, feel free to correct me on any misconceptions.
Keep in mind (all these start with opium extraction to begin with. I am starting with dry pods ground to powder or high quality seeds. My next experiment will be 2lbs of decent quality dried pods.)
1) The dissolution of the opium is done in the usual manner. The opium is cut into slices and stirred with five times its weight of water. Heating to 45-50°C is applied to speed up disintegration.
So say I have 1000 grams of dried pop powder I should make a tea starting with 5000 grams of water. For how long though do you think?
2) The filtration and washing of the completely disintegrated opium follows to some extent the known pattern of the counter-current method as described by Schwyzer (18) and Barbier (1), (2), but does not aim at obtaining a highly concentrated extract. The marc which remains after the separation of the aqueous extract by filtration is **washed five times with 1 to 2 parts of 2% acetic acid for one part of opium.
This is where I am totally lost. Is this saying to filter the water from the plant matter in my case, then wash the plant matter 5 times with 1 to 2 parts of a 2% acetic acid solution and save the liquid from that? What exactly is meant by 2% acetic acid solution? And once I make this acetic acid solution I should do 5 washes with up to twice the volume of the plant matter? Or do I have this totally backwards and I am actually washing the tea and not even touching the plant matter any more?
This is already getting to be a long post. If anyone is willing to help me go through this in layman terms I'd be willing to even pay you for your time in bitcoin.
Really, I don't want to extract and convert to any salts or anything. I just want to know the correct temperature and PH to most effectively extract as many alkaloids as possible from ground up pods or good quality seeds From what I have been reading this may take a few washes of different characteristics?
Allow me to explain how I have usually done this when I am not just making tea and drinking it:
1) Usually I just let my ground up pods or seeds sit in ~90C water (as suggested by source B/Ba - but after reading source A that has me questioning if it should be more like 45-50°C!)
2) Then after that maintaining that temp for about an hour I turn the heat down and take the lid off and just let it slowly evaporate to about 50% of original aquas solution while the plant mater still remains.
3) I strain this and use a cheese cloth and press to get excess juice if I am using pods
4) I do this 3 times total, mix all 3 extractions into one container and then either air dry slowly with a fan or put in a large surface area pyrex dish in the oven at the lowest setting and cook until a slimey putty that can be capsuled.
Am I missing out or potentially destroying any goodie with this method?
If that is just as effective as the process described in source A) ill just stick with what I know. But at the same time if the source I found above 1) makes a worthwhile higher quality product with more alkaloids and 2) helps me learn more about chemistry In the process it would be worth it to me.
Lastly, would there be any benefit to use a high proof alcohol or perhaps naptha at room temp to extract instead of water. Then proceed with my usual process just described? How or what would you search to find out if alcohol extracts such alkaloids?
Thanks for your time!

PS: Just as I was about to click post I found a final source. It is using some ultrasonic extractor but I think this info may still be valuable?
"The results of the study suggests that 1.10 of pH, 42.36°C of extraction temperature, 59.94 min of extraction time, and 19.99 mL to 500 mg solvent/solid ratio should be employed as optimal operating conditions for the best EY"
So it appears the common wisdom of the poppy subreddit may in fact be incorrect that 93C at neutral PH is optimal and 2 sources studies state somewhere around 43C is best.
Even stranger is source C states a PH of 1! I also cannot understand what solvent they are using. Any thoughts?

Cyber Crime - Cashaa NEO Bank Reports 337 BTC Hack, Indian Cyber Crime Team Investigating the Matter

Recently reported by India’s crypto news publication, CoinCrunchIndia, a major crypto NEO Bank, Cashaa has lost 337 BTC. It says that the Crime Branch of Delhi, a state of India is currently investigating the matter.
Cashaa is essentially a UK based crypto-friendly NEO bank, offering financial services to the crypto industry. In its latest hiring application for the PR manager, Cashaa claimed that the firm is growing more than 200% month by month. However, the platform has significant traffic from India and offers crypto services to Indian crypto enthusiasts.
As per details shared by CoinCrunchIndia, the attack was found on Friday (July 10) afternoon at around 1:23 pm (IST). While most exchanges use ‘multi-sig wallet’ as the higher level of security for funds stored in exchanges, Cashaa appeared to be using a ‘blockchain.com' wallet to store and send BTC. The first copy of the complaint shared by report reads the message from Cashaa’s employee as follows;
AT 1:23 PM, I logged into my Bitcoin.info wallet and made two transfers at 1:23 PM and 1:26 PM, at the same time multiple more transferrers happened to 'Receiver's address', emptying my wallet. It seems that the hacker got the notification as soon as I logged into my wallet, and stole the funds from him. today more than 336 Bitcoin is sent to the hacker address, affecting more people.
These BTCs were transferred to this BTC wallet address “14RYUUaMW1shoxCav4znEh64xnTtL3a2Ek” as per the records on ‘Blockchain explorer” and reports shared by CoinCrunchIndia.
Cashaa didn’t officially comment on the hack, however, it says that the company is ‘still investigating the damage caused by the incident’. It is believed that Cashaa ‘might suspend all deposits and withdrawals for 24 hours”.
In addition, Indian crypto exchanges and trading platforms are ready to work with Cashaa in resolving the issue. As such, Bitbns exchange ensured that they have marked the address, CoinDCX and WazirX also added that they will work closely with the Cashaa team ‘to support in whatever way they can’.
On the other side, an anonymous user on Twitter ‘United Crypto Exchange’ speculates that the hacker is trying to use 7BTC each, using blockchain and bitpie wallet, and then selling in mostly to Huobi. That being said, Kumar Gaurav, CEO at Cashaa blames at exchanges that hackers usually transfer stolen funds. Without specifically pointing at the matter and naming the exchange, Kumar Gaurav added;
“Everyone working in the crypto industry has to work very hard to bring the same level of security which currently an average person has when dealing with a bank account. As of today, hackers are very confident to hack crypto addresses and move it through exchanges that are facilitating such laundering through their systems. Exchanges like these must be shut down and owners of these exchanges should be charged with money laundering facilitation crime.”
Given the popularity of cryptocurrency and bitcoin, scams and hacks are on top bulletins quite often. In fact, we recently reported that India’s Kerala state-reported major scam in which the local police arrested the group of goons that kidnapped the mastermind behind a ‘bitcoin-related fraud scheme’.
Conclusively, Cashaa in our recent research report about demographics of Indian crypto users unveiled that they have a massive young audience between the age of '18-35.
Since Cashaa is yet to reveal the details about the incident, stay tuned with Bit2Buzz for the development of this 337 BTC hack.

On Netscape Moments and the Journey to Hawaii

Disclaimer: I'm an online rando, not a licensed financial advisor. DYODD. This is an update to a post from six months ago.
The mood feels frothier than it's been for some time.
Our community has been buoyed by a maelstrom of DeFi activity, progress on Ethereum's economic policies, a path to 2.0 which seems less meandering than ever before and, let's not be shy about this, a few weeks of solidly green cucumbers.
It's lovely, overdue & well-deserved.
Between the memes & generally festive dailies, I like to hit pause, zoom out and offer some reflections on where un-permissioned blockchain--and Ethereum, as the most successful to date implementation thereof--is.
The web took a long time to grow up.
1980 through 1990: Invention, experimentation & backbone. MUDs & BBSs dominated. In 1990, a version of HTML that can be approximately called "usable" becomes available.
1990 through 1994: Early adoption, basic protocols & functionality. The first real web browser, Mosaic, launches. Significant web presence from universities, research institutions and large media entities or businesses. "Online for dummies" portals like AOL, Compuserve & Prodigy become common-place. Bryant Gumbel's infamous "What is Internet, anyway" moment turns out to be a seminal point of inflection for popular perception of web use & the utility of being online.
1994 through 1998: Consolidation, increased adoption, commercialization, disruption. Home & workplace use, ISPs & online purchases all show exponential growth. People joke around water coolers about using AOL trial CDs as coasters. Netscape makes web browsing more intuitive & integrates protocols (http, ftp, gopher, usenet, smtp/pop) into a single program, removing most of the friction involved in casual daily use. "You've got mail" segues from niche nerd activity into pop culture phenom. Edge technologies like peer-to-peer sharing become existential threats to decade-old business models, with significant legal and political implications. Online presence becomes mandatory for most businesses. Future giants like Google, Amazon & Ebay/PayPal explore & expand new ways of monetizing online space.
1998 through 2003: Commoditization, dot.com boom & bust cycle. Large proliferation of risky or poorly thought-out ventures, violent subsequent contraction. Pets.com happens a thousand times over. Teens begin to tune into proto-social media: Friendster, Hotornot, ICQ/Aim, Myspace, Xanga. Popular culture becomes permeated by all things Internet, with signs of exhaustion due to overexposure. Through peaks & valleys, Fortune 100 players, old & new, scramble to firm up their respective beach-heads into cyberspace, praise be upon our once & future prophet, William Gibson.
2003 through 2007: Ubiquity. Internet is now an inextricable part of the desktop experience. Venture capital is in a perpetual arms race to fund "Web 2.0," a more accessible, secure & well-integrated way of experiencing online activity. Network advantages displace also-rans, with Google, Amazon and Facebook increasingly dominating "mind-share." Internationally, online conglomerates graduate into billion-dollar businesses. New business models crop up online. YouTube, 4chan, SomethingAwful, DeviantArt, Tumblr are now foundational growing up experiences for millions of teens.
2007 through present: Ubiquity, cubed. Internet becomes hyper-accessible & necessary to key aspects of contemporary life. Law, medicine, finance and governance become dependent, to a large degree, on online activity. With smart phones available for price points below $30, a significant majority of human beings on the planet can interact with the most powerful & immediate way of accessing information we've ever built on a mass scale. Content consumption and creation explodes. Instant messaging, video-conferencing, geo-location sevices & flexible payment models become trivial aspects of every-day life.
That's three decades for the Internet & its main interface, the web, to reach maturity.
Blockchain was initially parameterized in 1991.
Bitcoin began in 2008.
Ethereum was proposed in 2013.
If we compare blockchain in general & Ethereum in particular to the development and eventual domination of the Internet, we're barely making headway through the second phase: early adoption, basic protocols & functionality.
My first point:
It's early on in the journey.
In some ways, blockchain & Ethereum are like the Internet, in that they represent transformative technologies.
In some ways, blockchain & Ethereum are unlike the Internet.
Thin protocols like http, ftp, email, etc, move data around. Value is captured by entities which acquire data and transact it: Google, Amazon, Ebay, Microsoft, Facebook, Twitter.
Fat protocols like blockchains both move data around AND store it. Value is captured in the protocol itself.
My second point:
Based on objective data such as network use and development activity, Ethereum is the clear front-runner when it comes to public, un-permissioned blockchains.
We remain in the "overestimating early adoption/change" phase of blockchain & cyrpto-currency. Multiple projects in the top 25 by marketcap metric are of dubious technical & financial value. Some exchanges engage in market-distorting practices. Fraudulent "personalities" in the space still command significant attention. There's material risk to involvement in the early stages of any venture, blockchain & Ethereum included.
But: The flip to "overestimating early adoption/change" is "underestimating long term adoption/change."
And here is where I'd like to draw attention to the title of this post:
Netscape moments.
  • On the browser side, Brave has removed most of the complexity in privacy and blockchain-based, fairly distributed incentives. The growth is astounding & shows no sign of relenting. When Bill Burr does ad reads, it's safe to say that we're no longer looking at an obscure or arcane product.
  • On the wallet side, Argent has abstracted, as ethical-trade well put it,"most of the complexity that currently slows down onboarding on Ethereum and defi." Early response seems to have been overwhelming.
Netscape represented a dramatic turning point in Internet & web growth precisely because it consolidated and simplified a large number of complex and powerful technologies.
My third point:
We could be witnessing a number of similar flash-points which will be in retrospect acknowledged as fundamental pivots to parabolic growth--and they're happening on Ethereum.
A summary:
  • It's early on in the journey.
  • Based on objective data such as network use and development activity, Ethereum is the run-away front-runner when it comes to public, un-permissioned blockchains.
  • We seem to be witnessing parabolic growth "Netscape moments," and they're happening on Ethereum.
If 2020 is to crypto what 1994 was to the Internet, we can barely imagine the degree to which the world will run on blockchain in 2030.
If you're reading this, you're part of the 0.001% smart or lucky enough to understand what future is being built on, the same way that my father knew how the Internet will shape these last three decades.
You have a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Things like the BTC/ETH ratio & 35% fiat valuation drops or rises represent trivial noise in a broader landscape defined by tectonic realignments in technology, finance and politics.
I have a single question on those who have read this far:
On what kind of a time scale are you a bull on, and what are you doing about it?
I know what my answer is.
I wish all of you, /ethfinance brothers & sisters, good fortune and good health through the promise of these beautiful days to come.

Blockchain Voting Will Determine Vladimir Putin’s Presidential Fate

Moscow citizens will be able to vote on Vladimir Putin’s Constitutional amendments via a blockchain-powered system.
Russia’s upcoming e-voting on the Constitutional amendments will be implemented using blockchain technology.
Moscow citizens will be able to cast their votes on Vladimir Putin’s Constitutional amendments online via blockchain-powered e-voting. As announced on the Moscow government’s official website, Moscow voters can sign up for the upcoming e-voting starting from June 5.
Blockchain makes voting “almost impossible to hack”
Scheduled to take place from June 25 to June 30, the e-voting will be implementing blockchain technology to “ensure security and transparency.” As officially announced, blockchain will help to anonymize and encrypt each vote to provide safety and immutability of data.
As a blockchain network “does not have a single server,” the chain is “almost impossible to hack,” the official announcement says.
The statement reads:
“The safety and transparency of electronic voting will be ensured by blockchain technology. Such a network does not have a single server: in order to change the information regarding bulletins, it is necessary to obtain the approval of most network participants, so the chain is almost impossible to hack. The vote itself is anonymized and encrypted.” In the announcement, the Moscow government did not specify what kind of blockchain technology exactly is going to be deployed during the vote. The authority also did not mention any company assisting in implementing the technology for the voting process. Cointelegraph reached out to the e-voting customer support to find out more details on the matter. This article will be updated should they respond.
The vote could extend Putin’s term by other 12 years
During the vote, Russian citizens will choose whether they support the Constitutional amendments.
First introduced on Jan. 15, 2020, the Constitutional amendments proposal aims to allow Putin to serve two more six-year terms — until 2036. If Russian people vote against the amendments, Putin will finally have to leave his Presidential post in 2024. Putin has been serving in office either as President or prime minister since 1999.
During his long-running rule, Putin has failed to introduce legislation for the cryptocurrency industry in Russia despite issuing multiple deadlines to adopt one. The Russian President may rule the fate of one of the biggest cryptocurrency and blockchain markets worldwide. As reported by Cointelegraph, Russia has been leading the world in 2020 by its share in global Bitcoin (BTC) trading on peer-to-peer exchange LocalBitcoins.
In late 2019, Changpeng Zhao, CEO of the world’s largest crypto exchange, Binance, called Russian President Putin “the most influential person in the blockchain space.”

Cost basis/income tax calculations for BAT earned from ads

So, seeing posts like this one around here is making me concerned. If I simply have Brave Rewards enabled in my browser, and nothing more - I'm not registered as a creatopublisher, I'm not verified with Uphold, I haven't in any way cashed out my tokens - what in the heck do and don't I have to report on my 1040 to avoid getting stuck in a perjury trap?
Every website and Reddit commentor seems to have a different answer on this. Some of the answers are more clearly in line with IRS guidance than others but in many cases there is no clear sense to be had of which is "more reasonable" than the others. Yet since I've had Brave Rewards enabled since mid-2019, it behooves me to "get this right" when I fill out my 2019 tax return, lest the IRS come down on me for being inconsistent with my answers should I have better answers to these questions in future years.
The IRS is clear on one thing: cryptocurrency, in general, is valuable property and treated much like gold or other non-dollar capital assets (whether or not they're intended or used primarily as "money"). If your employer pays you in bitcoin (or gold, or a car, or a cow, etc.), you owe taxes on that income the day you receive it, whether or not you "cashed it out" by selling it for dollars. The IRS expects you to compute a "cost basis" for the property you received by determining its current "fair market value" in dollars, and that's what you report on your tax return. If and when you sell that property for dollars at any later date, that's a separate transaction, which may or may not incur a capital gain or loss (difference in value you received from the sale vs. what it was worth when you originally got the property), and that is reported in its own line on the 1040 (separate from ordinary income, depending on whether you held the property more or less than 1 year before selling it).
So far, so good - that's all straightforward enough and well-precedented since it's the same thing people are used to doing for other capital goods such as stocks/bonds, precious metals, or real estate. It's even straightforward for people who simply trade crypto as an investment, like Bitcoin or whatever. In that case it's no different (tax-wise) from trading gold, and if you do it through a broker like Coinbase, Uphold, etc. you'll probably get a nice statement at the end of the year that breaks it all down and you can import into TurboTax or whatever.
That's still well and good for those who (like many here) are trading BAT as an investment, like any other crypto.
But Brave Rewards's BAT microtransactions are a whole 'nother level of craziness. If we're just using BAT within the Brave ecosystem - receiving it from ads and tipping/auto-contributing it back to publishers - does it ever enter the world of "capital assets" from my perspective as a user? If so, how the heck do I compute my cost basis? How on earth do I know how my BAT balance breaks down in terms of amounts received on particular days, which I absolutely need to know if I'm going to look up BAT/USD exchange rates online to compute cost basis information? Brave currently doesn't provide any sort of "wallet statement" showing transactions in or out of the browser on a date-stamped basis. I know that's planned for "the future", but that doesn't exactly help me for doing my 2019 taxes.
I realize that Brave cannot give "tax advise" per se, ad nauseum. But surely Brave has done some thinking about the tax implications of BAT/Brave Rewards for ordinary users, versus just saying "have fun explaining this to the IRS" - right? We know that Brave can and does make legal statements about what they believe, as a company based on the advice of their corporate counsel, the legal status of BAT is (see e.g. this answer in the official FAQ).
That, of course, doesn't guarantee that the government will see it that way (or that a judge will), but it's at least helpful to know "some professional lawyers spent a lot of time studying this and think the law says X", because that's a heck of a lot more than us randos on the Internet can guess at. At least if we have some consistent guidance, we can know what our story should be to the IRS and keep it straight, because otherwise we're at the mercy of whatever some auditor or administrative law judge might feel like. Maybe they won't go after most small-fry Brave users today, but you can bet they'll demand answers going back years into the past if one of those users were to become rich, or politically active, or otherwise interesting to the IRS at some point in the future. Taxes, after all, are the one area of the law where citizens are for practical purposes considered guilty (or at least, "liable to pay whatever the IRS demands") until proven innocent. (Sad, but too true.)
My case is the simplest possible one for a Brave Rewards user: I'm a resident U.S. citizen who's never "cashed out" my BAT, I'm not a "publisher" or "creator", I haven't received tips, and I'm not verified with Uphold (couldn't if I wanted to, since they're not licensed in my state). I've only ever made four small tips totaling 40.0 BAT with the initial grant I got from the User Growth Pool when installing Brave (because it was going to expire); I've been hanging onto my non-UGP earnings in the hopes that some of my favorite websites/creators will eventually become verified and I can start spreading the wealth around in a more meaningful way than just dumping it on the 1 or 2 sites I visit that are yet verified.
My questions are thus:
1) Is the BAT I receive from Brave Rewards considered to be a capital asset if I'm not holding it as an investment but just leaving it in the browser to be used as intended there (as a way of funneling ad proceeds from advertisers to publishers)? Does it matter if it stays in the browser and never gets withdrawn to an Uphold account? (e.g. does it then just qualify as "internal functionality of the web browser" and not a meaningful valuable thing I can put a dollar amount on, like a McDonalds Monopoly token with a "cash value" of $0.0001?)
2) If my BAT is considered a capital asset, how do I compute my cost basis for income (and future capital gains/losses) purposes? Is every single microtransaction an "income" transaction with its own separate cost basis that I have to track day-by-day? Or is income only realized when Brave deposits my earnings to my browser on the 5th of the month? Or does it only count if/when I connect an Uphold account and "cash out"?
3) Do I have to answer "Yes" to the new 1040 question asking "did you receive, sell, send, exchange, or otherwise acquire any financial interest in any virtual currency"? (I haven't touched any cryptocurrency in my life besides what I've gotten from Brave Rewards.) Is BAT a "virtual currency" when used strictly within the context of Brave Rewards, or is it something more along the lines of spendable XP points in a video game which have no value (for me, at least) outside that system?
4) If I have to do detailed cost basis reporting, is there any way I can get my Brave browser to cough up some sort of datestamped transaction history for my Rewards? I realize there's no official UI yet, but is there an internal database or something I can dump? (I'm a professional software developer so I'm willing to "get my hands dirty". Heck, I'd be willing to fire up a debugger on a core dump of the browser if that'll help...better that than being liable for tax fraud...)
5) If all else fails, can I escape this blooming mess by just turning off Brave Rewards, forgetting my wallet key (which I've never backed up), bit bucketing the BAT I've so patiently earned over the last year, and never looking back? Is it too late to do so since I've already received the BAT in tax year 2019 (regardless of what I might do with it in 2020, including thus throwing it away)? I realize that in practice I could probably do so and get away with it, but I want to be right with the law here. After all, even if I report nothing on my 2019 tax return regarding crypto, the IRS could always find my posts here on Reddit and say "see, we have proof that you used Brave Rewards in 2019"... Even if I'm a "small fry" at this point in my life that the IRS won't care to go after, I don't want to have a sword of Damocles hanging over my head for them to trigger if and when they feel like it later in life.
Help me my dudes, you're my only hope! ;-) (And I suspect many, many others are quietly freaking out about this too...)

Why I Believe in Bitcoin

When I made the decision to invest in bitcoin, it was for a long-term investment.
I feel bitcoin is going to rise in price significantly in the next 5-10 years. I also feel that it is a good store of value at the price I paid for my bitcoin. I have faith in the bitcoin network and I see bitcoin as the gold standard among cryotocurrency.
I was around during the early days of the internet. Connecting to local bulletin boards (or pay long distance to connect to exotic far away boards) via dial up 2400baud modem. I had a free unlimited America Online account for being a Beta tester and remember telling older family members that websites would replace 1-800 numbers on the bottom of the screen at the end of commercials and the general response I got was "Oh, that's just for computer nerds" and widespread adoption would never happen.
They started to believe me a little when I broke the news of Princess Diana dying from AOL Headlines. I ran out and told my family about what happened and they thought I was crazy. Well, I don't blame them. They were watching the news.
I was extremely young at the time and felt that the internet was going to change how we live life on a daily basis.
And look where we are now. Billions of people are connected via the internet with computers in their pocket 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
I felt so strongly about that and that's how I feel about bitcoin.
I don't even fully understand the technology, but I feel it.
I've learned in my life to trust true gut instincts. That's what I feel about Bitcoin.
So far, so good.
HODL ON, my friends.

Thoughts on the ratio, the future & the path forward

Disclaimer: I'm an online rando, not a licensed financial advisor. DYODD.
In light of recent angst about the BTC/ETH ratio & choppy price action, perhaps the following will be useful to ground your thinking about what Ethereum represents, its path to success & how you personally might approach it.
I grew up in Eastern Europe. My family was relatively well off: after the Iron Curtain fell in 1989, my father got a Fulbright scholarship at Stanford. He returned with dollars and, more importantly, American connections.
He constantly talked about how the future was going to be defined by the Internet.
I was a kid. Whatever "the Internet" was supposed to be, I was way more interested in playing Spectre and messing around with ClarisWorks on the PowerBook 100 my dad had brought back. In my defense: I was 6 & English isn't my first language.
My dad turned out to be right. But through the 90s & beyond, the Internet didn't always seem to be what the future will be built on.
A casual look @ how long it took the web to reach maturity:
Netscape makes web browsing more intuitive & integrates protocols (http, ftp, gopher, usenet, smtp/pop) into a single program.
Teens begin to tune into early social media: Friendster, Hotornot, Myspace, Xanga.
If we compare blockchain in general & Ethereum in particular to the development and eventual domination of the Internet, we're barely making headway through the second phase: early adoption, basic protocols & functionality. There's disruption & early commercialization, especially with defi & supply chains, but wide-spread adoption & killer "Keep It Simple, Stupid" apps akin to Netscape aren't here yet.
Took a while to get here, but here's my first basic point:
It's very, very early on in the journey.
In some ways, blockchain & Ethereum are like the Internet in that they represent radical new technologies.
In some ways, blockchain & Ethereum are unlike the Internet.
Thin protocols like http, ftp, email, etc, simply move data around. Value is captured by entities which acquire data: Google, Amazon, Ebay, Microsoft, Facebook, Twitter.

There is material risk to involvement in the early stages of any venture, blockchain & Ethereum included.
But: The flip to "overestimating early adoption/change" is "underestimating long term adoption/change."
If my first two points are accurate, then 2019 is to crypto what 1994 was to the Internet, and we can barely imagine the degree to which the world will run on blockchain in 2029.
If you're reading this, you're part of the 0.001% smart or lucky enough to understand what future is being built on, the same way that my father knew how the Internet will shape these last three decades.
You have a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Things like the BTC/ETH ratio & 20% fiat valuation drops represent trivial noise in a broader landscape defined by tectonic realignments in technology, finance and politics.
In conclusion, I'd like to encourage everybody to consider:
  • What scale are you thinking on?
  • What timeline are you thinking on?
  • Are you aiming for something life-changing or not?
I know what my answers are.
Good luck & god speed, brothers & sisters.

Weekly news review (August 10-16)
We hope your Monday is running smoothly! Let's take a look at last week's news highlights ;)

A leading bank technology provider in Latin America is partnering with cryptocurrency exchange Bitex to facilitate cross-border payments over the bitcoin blockchain.
Bantotal is a core banking service provider based in Uruguay that services over 60 different financial institutions across 14 different countries. According to a Bantotal spokesperson, an estimated 20 million people use Bantotal’s money management services.
The partnership means that Bantotal clients will be able to access Bitex services in a marketplace of other traditional financial services that Bantotal offers through its BDevelopers program.
Calling it a “quantum leap” forward for local banks in Latin America, Beaudroit said that average fees associated with cross-border payments are up to five times cheaper using Bitex than international wire transfers.

An official at China’s central bank has said the institution is nearing the launch of its digital currency.
Since Facebook announced details of its Libra cryptocurrency project in mid June, China has viewed development of its digital coin with new urgency.
Early in July, the former governor of the PBoC Zhou Xiaochuan said that Libra poses a threat to payments systems and national currencies.
As previously reported, the large number of patents filed by the PBoC relating to its digital currency paint a picture of how it might work. They suggest the work addresses a technology that issues a digital currency, as well as provides a wallet that stores and transacts the asset in an “end-to-end” fashion.

New Zealand’s tax office, the Inland Revenue Department (IRD), has made it legal to receive salaries in cryptocurrency, and be taxed accordingly.
In its August bulletin, the agency published a new ruling under the Income Tax Act (in relation to section RD 3) that states that an employee can be paid salaries in crypto assets as long as the payments are for services performed under an employment contract, are for a fixed amount and form a regular part of the employee’s remuneration.
As far as tax goes, salaries paid in crypto assets will be treated as PAYE (pay as you earn) income payments. These are deducted by the employer and passed onto the tax department.
The new ruling – signed on June 27 by the agency’s director of public rulings, Susan Price – will apply for three years from Sept. 1, 2019.

An online survey by banking giant ING finds that Austrians are the most skeptical of Bitcoin (BTC) and cryptocurrencies in general. The poll, including respondents from 15 countries, shows that Bitcoin-positivity is also weakening in other countries, according to Der Standard, Aug. 14.
Austrians are generally conservative on investments, but on cryptocurrency they are very skeptical, with only 13% seeing digital currencies in a positive light.
Attitudes towards cryptocurrency worsened since last year’s survey. This year, 17% of Austrians think that cryptocurrency is the future of digital payments compared to 20% last year. Additionally, only 14% believe it is a significant form of investment in contrast to 17% last year.
Just 5% of Austrians would consider having their salaries paid in Bitcoin.
According to the survey, Austrians know more than most nations about cryptocurrencies, but prefer to avoid risk and volatility as much as possible.

In its latest research, security researchers at cybersecurity firm CheckPoint demonstrated how easy it is for hackers to remotely infect a digital DSLR camera with ransomware and hold private photos and videos hostage until victims pay a ransom.
Security researcher Eyal Itkin discovered several security vulnerabilities in the firmware of Canon cameras that can be exploited over both USB and WiFi, allowing attackers to compromise and take over the camera and its features.
According to a security advisory released by Canon, the reported security flaws affect Canon EOS-series digital SLR and mirrorless cameras, PowerShot SX740 HS, PowerShot SX70 HS, and PowerShot G5X Mark II.

How can I stop the insane amount of spam emails i'm getting?

Up until around 6 months ago, I did not get a lot of spam emails, maybe 2 or 3 a week which is manageable but for some reason now i'm getting 20-30 a DAY, and these are only the ones that make it past the spam filter. Including those that don't it's 50-80 and occasionally important emails go to junk for some reason. I don't go on dodgy websites or install bad software so I don't know what happened.
I'm not sure what to do here. I know that clicking unsubscribe on a lot of spam emails makes it worse since they'll flag your email address as active so that probably isn't a good option. It's always coming from weird emails such as
infokpHnNyk.ð@onlinefitnessactivity.com
y572ue2♀️♀️♀️♀️♀️♀️»@contrastpersonalities.com
J4ebYLr🔫@azgjhjhsde.de
and usually stuff like "most powerful keto diet" or "bitcoin bulletin". None of them are legitimate websites that have a normal mailing list (which can be unsubscribed from easily). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
